The cost of wedding music,
factor by factor.
There's no single price for a wedding DJ or band, because no two weddings ask for the same thing. Here's what moves the number, so you can set a budget with confidence and know what you're comparing when bids arrive.

The date
Saturdays from late spring through October are the most requested nights of the year, and holiday weekends book first. A peak Saturday costs more and fills sooner than a Friday or a Sunday.
Hours
Most artists price by the event rather than the hour, so a two-hour booking isn't half the cost of a four-hour one. Longer receptions cost more.
The lineup
A solo DJ is the leanest option. A live musician playing over the DJ's mix adds a second performer, and a band adds several, each paid for the night and bringing more gear and setup time.
Ceremony and cocktail hour
Music for the ceremony and cocktail hour often means a second setup, separate microphones and sometimes a different act, like strings for the ceremony and a DJ for the reception. Each moment you add is added work.
Production
Sound for the room, microphones for vows and toasts, dance-floor lighting and special requests all factor in. Some venues have a house system an artist can use; others need everything brought in.
Venue and travel
Load-in rules, parking, travel time and venue requirements such as union crews, freight elevators or early setup windows add time, especially downtown or outside the city.

Common questions
How much does a wedding DJ cost?
The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study puts the average wedding DJ at $1,800 and the average live band at $4,500. Q Music has no set rate, and the weddings we've booked have come in below, between and above those figures. Your cost depends on your date, hours, lineup and production more than anything else, which is why Q Music gets you real bids for your wedding instead of a rate card. Share your date, timeline and the music you want, and vetted artists bid on that exact night, so you see what your wedding costs before you commit.
Is a live band more expensive than a DJ?
Usually, yes: every player in a band is paid for the night, and bands bring more gear and need more setup time. A popular middle ground is a DJ paired with a live musician, such as a saxophonist or violinist, who plays over the mix.
Do wedding DJs charge by the hour?
Most price by the event, with the length of the booking built in. That's why short bookings don't scale down evenly.
How far in advance should we book wedding music?
As soon as your date is set, especially for a Saturday between late spring and October. Popular artists commit months ahead for peak dates, and a bigger budget can't free up a calendar that's already full.
Can we have different music for the ceremony and reception?
Yes, and it's common: strings or a solo musician for the ceremony, then a DJ or band for the reception. Each act is booked and priced on its own, and your timeline reaches every artist in advance.
What should a wedding music booking include?
Get the hours, sound system, microphones for the ceremony and toasts, lighting, MC duties and setup time in writing before you book. With Q Music those details are part of the contract, and every artist receives them in advance.
How do we set a music budget for our wedding?
Start with how you want the night to feel, then decide on hours and lineup, since those drive cost more than anything else. If you have a figure in mind, include it with your inquiry so the bids fit; if not, leave it blank and the bids will show you the range for your date.
How does Q Music price a wedding?
Every wedding gets its own bids from pre-vetted artists, matched to your event by technology and confirmed by industry veterans, so you pay for your night rather than a standard package. You contract and pay one vendor, and one team manages contracts, payments and logistics.
